Sloth

Topic:
Sloth is essentially apathy. This can be a mental or emotional quality as well as physical. In this sense, sloth isn’t just laziness of body, but laziness of thought or feeling as well. Medieval theologian Thomas Aquinas is on to something when he writes, “Sloth is a kind of sadness, whereby a man becomes sluggish..." As fun as it can be to be lazy, sloth begins from a downcast disposition or attitude, a sort of “sadness” we can call apathy or ambivalence. The word sloth comes from the Greek word for “carelessness,” and that's exactly what sloth is—not caring. (source: www.theresurgance.com)

Do you agree or disagree with the statement above? Explain with examples from 2011.

I do agree with this statement. Although being lazy or laid back can be a quality that is sought after by some, extreme slothfulness can lead to the abusers downfall, as we saw in "Shiloh". After Leroy's accident, he simply lost the will to do anything beneficial towards Norma Jean or their relationship.

After fifteen years of driving his rig, Leroy was in a terrible accident which destroyed his career as a trucker. It left him crippled and lazy, even after making a full recovery, Leroy still moped around the house, doing various arts and crafts activities, while waiting for Norma Jean to come home and play her organ so he could also smoke his weed, which only furthered his slothfulness.

One example of this in our current society is with the recent recession in America's economy. After the stock market collapse, millions of Americans lost their jobs and soon were unemployed. Most of these Americans developed cases of slothfulness and are still looking for jobs.

I mostly  agree with this statement. Also I disagree with some ideas in this statement.
In the second sentence, it says this can be a mental or emotional quality as well as a physical. But I disagree the idea that physical is the same level of reason that makes people sloth with mental and emotional quality. There are some disabilities who born with physically disabilities. Although they are physically can't do something really busy, and their body doesn't suit to physical activities, but if their mental and emotions are still busy, and have passion, motivation to do something and don't give up, they are not sloth. But if they are physically perfect but mentally and emotionally lazy, they can be sloth though they have perfect body. The physical things can also be factor that leads to sloth ,but not as well as mental and emotional quality.
But I mostly agree with this statement. And I agree the idea that says sloth is sort of sadness. Because there are many people who become sloth because of their sadness or depression of their mind. When they become sad and depress, they do not want to do anything and don't care about anything even if it is really important things. Also when someone become sad and depress in their mind, they loose their motivation and passion so it can also affects to their acts and physical attitude, and it can leads them sloth.
Lastly I also agree that this statement says sloth is carelessness, and not - caring. Sloth comes from the think and mind don't care about what they have to care about. If they don't care that they have to care, the loose their responsibility. And think everything goes well without them. When they don't care for the first time, they become more and more lazy after that. But in my opinion only not - caring is not the definition of the sloth. Not caring what they have to care is real sloth. Because if they don't do what they have to do, and just do what they want to, it can be also sloth. So even though they care something, it's not the things that they to care about, it is definitely sloth. But I still agree that not - caring is the main reason that makes people sloth.

I agree with that 100 percent. When people are happy, there is never a need for them to be lazy. You want to be with the people you care about to make you happier.

When something happens to a person that isn't a good thing it sends them to a sad mode. It makes you not want to be with anyone or do anything because it can remind of your sadness. Or you just haven't anything that you want to fight for in life and you do nothing about anything. Another big reason is when people don't want to do anything because of how busy they are with other things and making plans just to avoid that event.
Some examples from 2011 are Kim Kardashians marriage. After 73 days a divorce? Neither of them must have not been trying. Another one is why I don't have my license. I should have taken six driving classes over the summer but i was to busy with friends and never being home, that i couldn't get my license on my birthday or two months after that.

The statement that says sloth is just simply carelessness is the truth. When someone is lazy they are simply exhibiting this. Especially today in 2011, when the mindset is ‘if it doesn’t happen to me it’s not my problem’.
For example the mixed views about the war. When people are going through their day to day lives they’re too preoccupied with the small scale problems they may have to realize what’s going on around them. Many families in this world have a member involved in the military and those who don’t neglect to see their point of view. They are simply careless and if they would take a couple minutes out of their daily lives they would see what it is like to go through what military families do. These people are exhibiting sloth because they are coming up with simple tasks to take away from time they could be spending helping others.
Another reason why sloth is mainly carelessness is because when people see others on the streets begging for money most don’t stop and help. This ties back to the fact that when people aren’t affected by something, they don’t wish to think about it at all. In America, at any given time there are 700,000 to 2 million people facing homelessness. Many of which live on our streets. Many of those who are privileged enough to have a home, don’t consider this their problem. This is considered sloth because in retrospect it would take one less than a minute to take out their wallet and help those in need. However they simply don’t care enough to do so.

In the year 2011, the U.S. has nearly fourteen million people that are currently unemployed. Losing a job can be a life-altering event, which puts an additional burden on top of the stress of everyday life. A number of people have been laid off for various reasons, most of which they have no control over. People decide to deal with this loss in many different ways. Some decide, after losing their job, to move on and continue to seek out work. These men and women are respected, because they do not go home defeated. They are not guilty of sloth because they keep trying to find a job despite the unforgiving economy.
However, there are also people who succumb to sloth once they have lost their job. Some men and women sit at home filled with self-pity, that in some cases over comes their life. They become overwhelmed with worry about being able to put food on the table as well as paying the basic utility bills. Mortgages, clothes, tuition and car payments consume their conscience. Every adult is concerned about providing for their families but this weighs especially heavy on the unemployed. They begin to make the common excuse, that it is impossible to find work because “nobody is hiring”. Making excuses is the start of sloth; you create other problems so you do not have to confront the most apparent ones. You no longer want to spend everyday searching for a job, so you give up. The fatal flaw is giving up. Once you lose hope, it is a downward spiral from there. Losing a job is devastating, that devastation turns to sadness, and that sadness often turns to sloth.
The relation of sadness to apathy and sloth is completely relevant. The topic of the unemployment rate due to the economy is just one of the examples of sloth in 2011. We have an entire segment of the work force in jeopardy of sloth because of our current economic situation. This unforgiving economy may have long lasting effects on future generations.

The above statement is not true for this time period because a term like "lazy" is thrown around so much that its meaning has been dumbed down. Some people say that people who don't do their homework are lazy but they are always doing something else that interests them more. True laziness in our time would be somebody who lives off of others money and puts no effort into getting a job of their own.

When somebody says that a person is lazy in todays time, it usually means that they aren't doing something that they are supposed to be doing for them. By this definition, all people are lazy because there is always something in life that you don't want to do so you don't do it. On the contrary not many people fit the old definition of sloth either. Todays society is somewhat lazy but not too lazy but going down the road we are currently on we will probably all become sloths if we don't make a change in the near future.

Medieval theologian Thomas Aquinas is absolutely right when he says, “Sloth is a kind of sadness, whereby a man becomes sluggish..." The nature of being a sloth is often described as such. Being lazy feels like you don't care about things you could do with your life. You feel like there isn't a need to enthusiastic about things. You make excuses for people who want you to do something with your life. You don't care that your friends think you're an unsocial person. The reason is simply because you're too lazy to make an effort.
There are thousands examples of humans being sloths. All the examples of the year 2011 are similar to examples to people being lazy in other years. For the longest time humans have displayed laziness through life. Humans are often laziest in their teens. They tend to procrastinate and put off homework, chores, and life's daily worries. Criminals also show us their laziness by making excuses on how it wasn't entirely their fault for the crime. Or they simply don't care and don't respond for something they are held responsible for. Some people have jobs they have to go to each morning but do they want to? Most of them would say no, they are too lazy to quit their jobs. They're too much of sloths to change their life to the way they want it.
People can be lazy physically and also emotionally. Humans have displayed laziness for centuries. They've displayed how sadness and the ability to not care can take over their life. Being a sloth can feel very sad and unenjoyable. Which obviously can't be any fun for anybody.

R. Sorfleet said...

I agree with Thomas Aquinas' thought on sloth. He says that “Sloth is a kind of sadness, whereby a man becomes sluggish..." Sloth also was stated in the statement that it means carelessness. I also agree with that. When someone knows that they are to do something and they don't because they make up excuses not to they are being careless and lazy.

In 2011 people have been becoming more sloth-like. We now have so many electronics that can do certain things for us. Instead of walking to a library to get a book to look up information people can go onto the Internet and search for what they want. People are cheating themselves out of learning on they're own and are having technology produce the information for them.

Also another example would be how on TV now they have shows about people hoarding things in they're houses. The people on the show may have an issue that they think cannot be fixed, however it only shows how lazy they are to not get rid of things that are not necessary for them anymore. This carelessness can end up becoming very dangerous.

I disagree with Thomas Aquinas’ quote; Sloth may not always be related to sadness. Sloth can simply be one who has no desire to do anything. Also there can be other factors that can cause sloth. For example in the story Leroy had been away for a very long time, which made him and Norma feel out of place. Through out the story they make excuses to avoid each other, used Marijuana that has a great impact on ones motivation, and had different goals. Sadness did not play a role in her lack of motivation.
In our modern society when someone thinks of sloth they think of laziness. An example of sloth in 2011 is procrastination. Earlier in the year we almost encountered a government shutdown because we kept putting off the problem. Sloth has evolved over time from sin to a characteristic. When someone is slothful in modern terms it usually relates to work. However in the past it could be an aspect of a relationship or a society.

A Slothful person is someone who does nothing. It is considered one of the deadly sins. Therefore, the Thomas Aquinas' statement is correct. A man or a woman who lets life just pass them by means they are too lazy to do anything with their life. This definitely tells you a lot about the word "sloth".

One example of being a sloth is when someone doesn't try to get good grades. They don't take the time and effort to complete their homework. They just don't try and they also don't care about it. Another example is soldiers who come back from the Iraq war. When the soldiers come home it is hard for them to find jobs. They can't do anything to help themselves get better. This causes them to be sad and depressed. Not able to do anything for yourself makes you feel lost and destroyed in the world. There are people in this world who are the definition of being a "sloth" and they rather be that way or they cannot help it.

I agree with Thomas Aquintas because a lot people in the world just dont care. An example of this in my opinion are majority of homeless and poor people in the US. When I pass by going to a Sox's game I see a lot of homeless people. Most of them are looking for a handout from everyone who drives by. This represents Thomas Aquintas' opinion of Sloth because it gives off the vibe that none of these people actually care about getting a home, most are just fine taking handouts from anyone they can.

Thomas Aquinas was dead on in his opinion on Sloth. There are a lot of people who represent Sloth and its
really sad that those people don't care about living. They
don't want to make a change in their lifestyle so they have a better life for themselves There really isn't a reason for
people to be lazy to the point where they don't care about
how they live. People with that mentality shouldn't be living
because it's just a waste of resources that could go to hard
working people .

The statement that sloth is not caring is true. Sloth is not just idleness; it is also a sadness that settles within someone, and inhibits them from any productiveness and progress. In the story, Shiloh, Leroy and Norma Jean both exhibit sloth when it comes to trying to keep their marriage together.
Leroy had been a trucker for many years, keeping him on the road, and had recently been injured and is now back home. When Leroy returned home, he began to notice a strain on his relationship with his wife, Norma Jean, and makes plans to build a simple log cabin in one of the new subdivisions for her. While Leroy had been on the road, Norma Jean explored multiple new hobbies, and found many ways to pass time alone; so when Leroy is back at the house with her, she doesn’t know how to react to him. She takes up classes to avoid being around Leroy, and makes it clear that what she wants from their marriage now is different from what she wanted when they first got married. Leroy has a hard time recognizing this, and thinks he can pick up their relationship where they left off; but they left off in a place of sorrow over their child’s death. The sorrow that they both still feel over their tragedy is what drives them to their extreme levels of sloth. Leroy thinks that their marriage should be as simple as the log cabin he thinks he will build. Norma Jean doesn’t care about the marriage anymore and just wants Leroy to stay away from her. The two of them cannot get over the loss of their child and it causes them to busy themselves with meaningless activities instead of working to make their relationship last. Eventually their sloth and lack of caring for one another leads to the destruction of their life together and they are left to part their separate ways.
In today’s society, sloth is very relevant as well. For example, the United States has one of the highest divorce rates in the world. Many people become lazy when it comes to staying with their spouses, and find it easier to leave each other than caring enough to put any energy into helping the marriage. Often times, if any pressure or strain is put on a relationship, people lose drive to maintain the relationship and find excuses to avoid any methods of improvement.
Another example of idleness and sloth relating to the divorce rates in America is people rushing into marriages that have no real potential of lasting. Many people are simply set on the idea of being married whether or not they believe in the relationship or not. Kim Kardashian, for example, dated Kris Humphries for six months before they got engaged and filed for divorce after 72 days of marriage. Perhaps, Kim was too anxious and focused on the idea of getting married that she didn’t care who she was marrying anymore. She felt that she was running out of time to get married, and was becoming despondent about not finding a suitable man to marry yet. She was too lazy to wait to find someone she actually cared about to marry, and settled for someone she knew she wouldn’t be able to build a lasting relationship with. This happens to many people; they get impatient looking for something they want; when it doesn’t present itself in what they feel is an adequate time frame, they lose any motivation to wait any longer, and in carelessness, find an unsatisfactory substitution for what they really want.

This statement is saying that sloth is more than laziness, it is saying that sloth is as much a physical problem as it is a mental/emotional problem. With sloth you not only physically don't do anything but you don't feel the same guilt as someone without sloth about not doing something. You also don't think about the consequences of not doing anything because of your sad disposition. I completely agree with this statement because in order to physically display sloth you need to have had or continually have thoughts and the mentality of sloth. For example when you don't want to do an assignment, that thought develops in your mind, it is a mental state of sloth first. Then, you physically do whatever to avoid the task. From the story " Shiloh" we see this in the character Leroy when he makes plans to build a log house for his wife Norma instead of going out and looking for work and selling his rig. When we as the reader as well as Leroy know that he will not actually build the log house he is trying to make excuses to avoid the real task that needs to be done which is getting a job. I agree that both the mental aspect with a disposition of sadness as well as the physical aspect of laziness make up sloth.

There are examples of sloth for the year 2011 and they include the following. With the current rise in unemployment rate in the U.S., people are losing their jobs and it is also becoming hard to find jobs. This can be very discouraging to people out of job who are now forced to look for another job. Some Americans may be starting to or have already given up on the job hunt because of the depression that comes with the constant failure and inability to find a job. Some may become content with being unemployed which is where sloth can and does develop.  Sloth is evident here because those who become sad about their situation become depressed which causes them to not want to do anything about their situation, then as the sloth mentality grows on them they start making excuses for why they can't fix their situation and pay no attention to the consequences of not fix their situation which would be in this case going out and getting a job.  Another example is for a number of years now cooperations have been sending jobs overseas and not creating jobs here at home. President Obama's job bill would've created ways for people here at home to get jobs. However, the bill was defeated. This is sloth because cooperations are not trying to find ways to create jobs over here which is a problem, they are avoiding the task of creating jobs here at home which is laziness because they are putting off/avoiding an issue that needs to be addressed.

The governments attitude toward unemployment is sloth like at best. Recent Illinois unemployment rates stands at 10.1 percent. The current administration seems to be derilict in attending to this issue. While this statement can be attacked as partisan I believe it is a bipartisan issue.
Both parties democrat and republican are apathetic to this important issue concerning the people of Illinois. If this important issue is not attended to promptly the state could fall into a downward spiral that it may not be able to dig out of. I encourage everyone to pressure their elected officials to attend to this urgent matter.

O. Ashley said...

Sloth is not carelessness,it is the act of not doing what you are supposed to. If the problem is not addressed, not matter what is being done, it amounts to nothing or idleness. For example, if a person wants to lose weight, but instead decides to sit on the couch and watch TV, it is not that this person doesn’t care. They are not addressing the problem and they get no results. Another example is if a student has a test. Instead of studying the student is playing video games. The problem is that this kid needs to study. By him not doing so it results to nothing, and probably a bad grade, because he didn’t get his studying done. In other words, sloth is simply procrastination and by beating around the bush the outcome is idleness.
In the news sloth is portrayed. A recurring celebrity in the news is Lindsay Lohan. Lindsay Lohan’s emotional pain is dealt with by drinking alcohol etc. Going home and breaking the law again and again is not only sloth but disobedience. This relates to Shiloh because Leroy’s emotional pain had been dealt with by being absent from home and avoiding communication with his wife. Presently, he still avoids the issue with marijuana. He knows that he needs help because the loss of his son, but he dismisses the it with his new “hobbies” and “ideas”. Ideally, beside the urgent need of professional help for Lohan, she need to address what is causing her to drink. Realistically she is continuing to let her fans down by procrastinating instead of dealing with her issues, which all reverts back to her still being an alcoholic.
In the recent political world, Herman Cain just did an interview where he was asked if he agreed with how Obama handled Libya. It is sad that in his campaign for president he is ill-informed on our current events. It seems like the least a potential candidate could pay attention to, seeing that he is not the president yet. Even though I understand that to be CEO of anything is take hard work, at this point Herman is not showing that he wants to take the next step. This situation also relates to a previous comment about the boy who isn’t studying. If Herman doesn’t study the facts he will not be elected president just like the boy will get a bad grade on his test. This to me is the epitome of laziness. In Shiloh, Norma Jean participated in many activities whether it was cooking, body building, or fantasizing. Although she did much, she still avoided the fact that her son died which driving them apart.
Sloth is one of the bigger sins pertaining to everyday people. There is always a problem, it depends on how it is addressed to get the right outcome. There are many mechanisms to help sloth, like tutors, trainers, therapists, and even iPads. It is those who have an appetite for success who will do good.

I have to agree with Thomas Aquinas on his opinion of the word sloth’s meaning. When one has a mindset of sadness, they eventually begin to not care which in turn causes the physical laziness that most people imagine when thinking of sloth.
Just think of the idea of depression. When one has been pressed with too many responsibilities and tragedies and just cannot cope with his or her issues, they begin to develop a deep sadness within them, kind of like someone who has dealt with the loss of a relative. This poor state of emotion causes them to give up on their life, stopping any kind of work and cutting themselves off from people in their lives. Instead, they remain withdrawn from others and quit any physical or mental activity, which is basically sloth. I can relate sloth occurring this way because it has happened with me after the death of my grandmother earlier this year. Immediately after, with my family in a state of mourning and my mother being gone for months while she was sick, I just gave up on work, and it was noticeable due to the considerable drop in my grades. Due to my state of sloth, however, I did not seem to care much even as my grades slipped.
The entire cycle which led to sloth began with the sadness caused by the death of my grandmother, so it is easy for me to understand why Thomas Aquinas would come to the conclusion of sadness and carelessness being synonyms of sloth. Heck, we can see examples of that being the case in current events.
Let’s rewind back to 2010. The National Basketball Association was holding meeting during its All-Star Weekend to try to figure out a new deal for the collective bargaining agreement, which would expire after the 2011 season ended. After hours of no progress, both sides seemed to see trouble looming on the horizon, with quotes from both sides saying that a lockout after next year would definitely be possible.
And yet, instead of meeting more consistently to try to resolve this issue, the league continued to only having occasional, meaningless meetings that had no results, spanning from that day in February 2010 to the expiration day of the CBA on July 1st, 2011. No back-to-back days of bargaining sessions were held until mid-September, over two whole months into the lockout. Why did the players and owners wait so long to show any urgency? When they knew a lockout was a possibility over a year before, why didn’t they do anything they could to prevent it from happening.
The fact is, neither side really cared. The owners had enough money to last a season without basketball; as long as they ended up with a deal that they would benefit from and guarantee them money over the next decade. The players are already well off, and will still be successful even if they lose paychecks as the lockout rages on. The agents’ careers are much longer than the players’, so obviously, losing a season to them is more like a vacation than a huge loss of money. So really, all three groups could care less about getting the season started, so they watched, you could say they watched lazily, as games were cancelled from the schedule.
With the idea that a lockout would come no matter what being embedded in their minds, and knowing that for them, it wouldn’t matter, the NBA decided to let a season slip away instead of working to try to stop it from happening. This is a definitive example that can be seen in the news of sloth occurring from people just giving up hope and really not caring about what happen.

“By far the most dangerous foe we have to fight is apathy- indifference from whatever cause, not from a lack of knowledge, but from carelessness, from absorption in other pursuits, from a contempt bred of self satisfaction.” Sloth can be characterized by both carelessness and sadness, and each can trigger the other. When speaking of laziness, America’s citizens are never left out of the conversation. Whether it is physically, politically, or the incapability of being globally aware, American citizens are widely recognized for their apathetic means.
In today’s American society, obesity rates have spiked, as laziness is peaking. Americans have their mind put on completing the bare minimum in the easiest possible way. This lethargic behavior can lead to obesity, which Americans aren’t strangers to. More often than not this obesity can lead to grief and sadness, and instead of this sorrow encouraging these people to rid of their lazy habits, it drives them to remain slothful. The reason why these certain people are unable to detach themselves from their couch and get in something that resembles or involves motion is beyond me. Nonetheless, this sluggishness distinguishes how we Americans are equally lazy due to our physicality as anything.
As much as we are physically lazy, our lack of knowledge and carelessness politically and on a global level leads to an increase in apathy. We tend to be concerned with affairs, political and global, when it directly affects us, and this is largely due to us “not caring”. We care about who Kim Kardashian will be with next, yet don’t pay attention to starvation in Somalia. It seems as though modern American society is beginning to lose interest in real subject matters because due to the fact that it doesn't directly influence them.
There are many ways in which today’s society can be portrayed as lazy, two of the most prevalent in the United States due to physical and political unawareness. This apathy is a sole reason of our laziness. As soon as society can learn to get rid of this apathy, they can work towards overcoming this mass laziness that is prevalent in the United States.

It is said that there are two types of evil people-those that do evil, and those that see evil being done and don’t do anything about it. If it is in your power to stop a wrongdoing, and you simply stand aside and allow it to happen, should it not make you just as responsible? Caring is something that takes quite a lot of energy to do-so it’s very sensible to conclude that sloth, rather than simple laziness, is essentially being stuck in a state of apathy. But of course, if this definition is embraced, quite a number of people would have to shoulder the blame for something or another-how many cars pass by an accident on the highway before calling the police? And how many lives could have been saved if even one person in one of those cars hadn’t been thinking, “somebody else will call?”
A rather horrifically extreme example of how the terms sloth and apathy can be used almost interchangeably is the 2011 Penn State scandal. Former defensive coordinator Gerald Sandusky was charged with molesting eight young boys-boys from a program he had started for underprivileged youth. He took in these children with the promise to help them, and instead abused them in the most heinous way imaginable. As if that alone were not deplorable enough, however, also charged were athletic director Tim Curley and a vice president, Gary Schultz for failing to report child abuse. These men allegedly saw Sandusky with one of the boys-saw him, and did nothing. They did not go to the police-instead, they chose to walk away, and in doing this, essentially told these children that their suffering wasn’t worth a two-minute phone call. Although they did not commit the crime themselves, they are still being charged, because the law holds them responsible-and so do I. If apathetically letting a crime like this continue isn’t sloth, then I don’t know

In a quote by Thomas Aquinas he talks about how sloth is a kind of sadness and carelessness. This is defiently true no matter how happy you think you are if you are too lazy to do anything there is no way that you can be happy. Sloth can get to a point where you are so unhappy that you start to care about nothing anymore.
The short story "Shiloh" by Bobbie Ann Mason gives a very realistic example of sloth that does happen in real life. This is a good example of how someone went from being busy to not doing anything at all and this causes him to no longer be happy. After a while he no longer cares about anything anymore. And in the end it caused him to loose his marriage because he was to lazy to talk things out with her.

I agree with the statement. Sloth not only a physical laziness, but also a mentally apathy attitude.

In some time before, I read a research in China. It was about the word that Americans most dislike. The number one was "whatever" . Actually, whatever is kind of a carelessness of choosing, people are too lazy to choose a word to describe something. It also shows people now are lack of passion, careless about desciding thing. The second one was "you know". " You know" is a word very popular, people use a lot in daily conversation. It helps a lot to simplify our talk from explaining everything, but people are tired of listening to this word. "You know,..." "No, I don't know.." Many people prefer a clearly explanation more than a blurry simplification now. Because it shows a lazy attitude of life and careless of treating people.

Sloth is a carelessness, I totally agree. But I can hardly understand or agree with sloth is a sort of sadness. I think sloth is something we can sad for, but not sadness, it's different.

The statement is true because sloth is one of the most common sin especially among teenagers . Sloth could cause family work or relationship problems. It seems like sloth is the most innocence of the seven sin but could cause just as much problems as the other sins. Sloth happens to everyone including political leaders celebrities and the average Bob.

When it comes to education America falls behind. This is due partly because many students thinks they could get good grades without working hard and if a student comes home with a bad grade the parents assume the it’s the teachers fault. It is also due to the fact that many kids do not have an interest in learning as of other countries. The amount of money we spent on an average kid in America is 129,000 and the average of the top 30 countries is 95000 and yet we are still on the bottom of the list for best education. If we keep going on this path America is going to be filled with much more ignorant people and we will lose our spot as one of the most influential countries in the world

“Sloth is a kind of sadness, whereby a man becomes sluggish..." I agree that sloth comes hand in hand with being careless. When a person illustrates the characteristics of being sloth, they only show responsibility for themselves. They tend to worry about themselves rather than the whole of the group, while continuously displaying these acts even though they know that it may hurt others. Laziness lives in all people, but its whether they act on this laziness or not to classifies them as sloth.

Paris Hilton is the prime example of being sloth. She is an heiress to a billion dollar company, yet she does nothing to help others, however, she insists on buying a wardrobe full of name brand clothing. Another celebrity that demonstrates the characteristics of being sloth is Kimberley Kardashian. After just 72 days of marriage, she has ended her divorce with husband Kris Humphries. Rather than working out the problems and holes in her relationship with Kris, she decided to end it. This especially displays extreme laziness, as Kim continues to get attention from her divorce despite her acts of sloth.

I feel that sloth is exactly what it was saying. People in 2011 are extremely phisically lazy, but at the same time they are also mentally lazy so this is a perfect way to look at the "Sloth" topic. I have a friend that said to me that his neighbor would go to the car and back up to the mail box which was at the end of the driveway. That is what I call sloth to the extreme. If you look at it from the mental viewpoint the people are doing the bare minimum when it comes to basic things such as the way people when they type a paper they type the least amount to meet the requirments. That is sloth because they are to lazy to go beyond what the teacher or the boss is asking for. Over all I totally agree that sloth is both a phisical and a mental issue that many people in the 21st century are doing on a daily basis
