If I had to choose a sister between the two characters Emily or Hulga, I would probably choose Hulga. My reasoning for this can be explained in a short statement; Emily is a homicidal necrophiliac. Although Hulga’s nihilistic personality and lack of belief is a tad ridiculous, at least she doesn’t spoon with dead people and keep bodies in her home. Also, at least Hulga tries to be personable at times, while Emily locks herself away in the depths of her home.
In A Rose for Emily by William Faulkner, Emily hides her father’s body in her home for three days before the townspeople remove the body and give it a proper burial. Also, after poisoning Homer, she hides his body in a room in her house. Would you want someone like that in your home? Although Hulga is a bit of a drag sometimes, at least she doesn’t kill people.
Hulga would be a better sister because as long as you didn't talk to her, she wouldn't talk to you. Although Emily was the exact same way, she also kept rotting corpses in her house which would make it unenjoyable to live with her. Perhaps, if Hulga had a younger sibling, maybe she wouldn't be so cold and uncaring.
Hulga may say she believes in nothing but yet she still states her opinions about the way other people do the things they do. Emily, however, holds true to the ways of the old South and those ideals would be rather annoying to live with. Hulga is faking and if somebody could get her to realize that she could be a pleasant person to live with.

If I had to choose either Emily or Hulga to be my sister I would choose Hulga. Hulga because she's not a violent person and she barely does anything at all. When Hulga gets angry she doesn't go out to stores to but poison like Emily Grierson. Hulga deep down inside has a good heart, but she does not know how to open herself up to people. If Hulga did that she would definitely be a great sister no matter what.
Hulga would definitely a better sister than Emily. Emily killed her boyfriend which shows how crazy she is. Hulga who doesn't try kill anyone only uses her words to express how she feels. I would not like to have a sister who is hurts people by killing them. Also, Hulga only stays at home and becomes bitter while Emily makes herself seem suspicious and frightening. Hulga is someone that I would choose as my sister rather than Emily.
If I had to pick between Emily from A Rose for Emily or Hulga from Good Country People to have as a sister, I would no doubt pick Hulga. Hulga and Emily both possess major pride and their actions show it in many ways.
Emily is stuck in the past and can’t let go of the reputation her family used to have. She puts herself under the impression that she is better than everyone else. Her pride takes control of her mind after her father; her last close living relative passes away, and she refuses to accept his death or have the body removed for days. Her pride and lifestyle of living in the past comes back when she kills a man that she has an unrequited love for and keeps his body for over 40 years and sleeps with it. She felt that if she wasn’t good enough for him, he couldn’t have anyone else, and he had to stay with her forever.
Hulga had an accident when she was a young girl that caused for her to need a prosthetic leg. Growing up with her fake leg made her feel disrespected and ugly. It drove her to changing her name from Joy to the ugliest name she could think of: Hulga because she thought she deserved the ugliest name. She also grew to be very disdainful of everyone around her and began to use her leg and education as sources of pride. She made people feel as though she deserved pity and had the right to be rude because she had to live with a fake leg. She also tried to make people feel inferior by flaunting her high education. She specifically tried to put down her mother with her pride. Hulga recognizes that her mother is highly prideful as well; and is overly concerned with her appearance and reputation. Hulga finds her mother disgusting in that she is ignorant and thrives on judging everyone else on standards that she herself does not even live up to. Hulga purposefully tries to make herself as ugly and rude as possible in an effort to spite her mother and her pride in her reputation.
I would choose Hulga as a sister over Emily because although Hulga is unpleasant to be around, I feel that I can see the reason behind her pride and sympathize with it more than Emily. I also feel that Hulga’s pride does not drive her to as extreme levels of violence and gruesomeness; I would not be afraid of her coming and killing me in the middle of the night, and holding on to my body for the rest of her life. Emily does not have the sense of mind to know that even if the last person she loved is dead, she can’t hold on to the body forever just because she misses them; if she loves them enough she should give them the respect of a proper burial and peaceful resting place. Hulga at least understands how awful she acts, which is better than Emily who has simply lost her mind with time. I believe that if Hulga lived under slightly different circumstances, she would not be as prideful, which is why I would choose her as a sister over Emily.

Hulga would be most suitable as a sister compared to Miss Emily. Hulga may have a past of self pride but Miss Emily is worse. The feeling of possibly being spooned with after my death sickens me. It would be easier to take Hulga’s pride on a daily basis. Hulga will tell you what you mean to her; Miss Emily is more mysterious and more unpredictable.
Hulga just had her pride but Miss Emily had multiple issues with the dead. Not only did Miss Emily keep dead bodies in her house for longer than necessary, but also her behavior was out there. She stopped talking to people and going outside her house for ten years. Also the fact that she “dated” a gay guy adds to her strange behavior. Hulga may have displayed rude behavior to others but she did not do anything out of the ordinary. Living with Hulga may give you self esteem issues but you will absolutely not be in her house after your death.
There are many differences between Emilly and Hulga in the two short stories we read. Hulga however, would be easier to deal with as a sister. Whether it be that she is less to worry about, more interesting, or because she’s just easier to be around than Emily.
One reason why Hulga would make a better sister is because you would not have to worry about the wellbeing of your sister. Yes, Hulga has some self- image issues and needs a confidence boost, but that’s all that a sibling would need to worry about in that situation. With Emily though, you have to worry about her sanity. Something about her gives off the escence that she just isn’t okay and having to live with that could become an issue. The way you see yourself can change over time, but without professional help, there’s not a good chance that an insane person would not be cured.
Another reason why Hulga would be a better sister is because she’s an interesting person. She is more open to talk and discuss issues than Emily would be. Emily shut herself out from the world for about ten years. She always needed to be right and wouldn’t accept anyone else’s opinion. No one ever saw her come out of the house and she never had any contact with anyone other than her servant. Hulga did go out of the house and attempt to lead a normal life. She talked to her family and allowed for there to be a relationship between them, even though that relationship may not have been a healthy one.
The last reason why Hulga would be a better sibling than Emily is because she is easier to deal with. Having to live with Emily would just make you want to leave and not come back. She always has to be in control and needs to be right. You wouldn’t be able to say what was on your mind and things would become frustrating. Hulga at least allows others to share their side of an argument or their opinion on things. She doesn’t need to constantly be right and has learned to deal with her surroundings.

Emily or Hulga as a sister? A hard decision in fact, both supposedly mentally "insane"... Choosing the best of the worst, I would rather have Hulga as my beloved sister. Despite all of her issues with the world, and all of her crazy philosophies, at least she does not "spoon" with dead corpses. Hulga is a very interesting person, I admire the fact that she stands up for what she believes in and confronts people of their wrong doings. In the beginning of the story "Good Country People", Hulga thought she knew everything. In her mind, she could maniupulate everyone, because to her she "saw through to nothing". Sort of rotten, being rebellious, a thirty year old women trapped in a young girls body.
The difference between Hulga and Emily is that, Hulga learned from her mistakes. In the end of the story becoming more humble, and less of a know it all. Where as Emily did not change at all, she just ended up with a morbid fate. I admire the kind of people that can learn from their mistakes, therefore being my reason I chose Hulga.

I would rather have Emily as my sister if I had to choose between her and Hulga. Emily would be much more caring and obedient to her siblings. Hulga would rebel against her family as she did to her mother in Good Country People.
Emily would show great love and respect to her family members as she did to her father. My two younger brothers currently do not listen nor respect what I say. I assume from her love towards Homer Emily would be much more caring.
Emily had power, which brought her and her family pride. She was able to purchase Arsenic without a legitimate reason, and her power to “vanquish” people. Emily’s pride however did not overcome her morals, still had respect for her father. Hulga allowed the pride from her prosthetic leg to overcome her love for her family. Hulga’s pride blinded her view to reality; she was fooled and taken of advantage of. Emily’s pride is at level with her respect for family, but Hulga’s pride has out weighed every thing else.
If I were to have Hulga or Emily as my sister I would choose Hulga. This is because Emily killed a man who she loved just because she couldn't have him to marry. Seeing that shebhas killed somebody before showsnthat she might have some emotional problems and could get angry very easily.
Hulga though she is not the most sane person, would be a better choice than Emily because, she has never killed anyone and the only big problem that she has is having a big ego. Her big ego is something that could be ignorable, unlike Emily killing someone, which would just scare me and I don't think I would be able trust her as a sister. Hulga I could just ignore.
Identifying the better of two bad choices is a difficult deduction to make. As the characters in question are both extremely prideful, vain, and entirely unpleasant, I would far prefer being an only child rather than forced to live in the same household as either one. But as that is not an option, the only thing left is to decide who would be least likely to raise my blood pressure through the roof-although given enough time that scenario would be unavoidable in either case.
If I were to choose one of these women as a sister, my instinct is to go for Hulga over Emily. This is not to say that Hulga is any less of a pretentious thorn-I’d say they’re pretty evenly matched in that department. The reason I’m so inclined to say Hulga is not a matter of comparing vanity-but the difference between a stuck-up, immature girl and a woman who is quite possibly losing her mind. Imagine if I were to live with Emily-on any day, I could go up to her room, and what might I find? My “sister” in bed with a rotting corpse. Hulga is a person I would argue with and despise, but I’m quite sure she is not having delusions of necrophilia.
Hulga I can see as a partner for heated debates-someone who, as much as she aggravated me, wouldn’t drive me to question her sanity-and I have a feeling that I’d be watching sister Emily getting hauled into a psych ward on a stretcher if worst came to worst. At least with Hulga, I wouldn’t have to worry about people asking about the strange smell coming from the attic. That much is comforting.

If you had to choose either Emily or Hulga who would you want as your new sister?
Between choosing Hulga or Emily Grierson as my new sister, without hesitation I would choose Hulga. The main problem between both of these women are their personal traits and having to put up with them. In terms of living with them over however many years, Hulga’s personal traits could definitely be changed faster that those of Emily Grierson. While Hulga seems to be an all around negative person, Emily Grierson has some major psychological problems that need professional attention.
By Emily not being able to let go of her dad death is understandable. Most people would be very upset if one of their parents where to die, and denial is a normal symptom of grief. Emily saw the grief of her dad as unexpected and uncontrollable. When Homer rolled around and she found love that could replace the grief for her dad, she didn’t want to ever let that go again. She knew that with Homer she could be happy, so whether or not he liked it she would control his fate. Ultimately he didn't like her and he had to die, but Emily still didn't have to let go of him. Even though I feel that Emily would mainly keep to herself and means well, I see myself as a person who likes to get to know people. After a while she would probably get too obsessed and I wouldn’t be able to leave the house anymore. Ultimately, I would probably die to, so Emily is not an option.
Hulga is a large, manipulative, disrespectful and overly-prideful woman. She outsmarts her mom just because she knows that she is highly educated and can get away with it. She draws so much attention to herself even though she thinks of herself as ugly which makes her a contraction. With all of this, Hulga being my new sister would not be a bad thing, here’s why. Realistically with her recent robbery, of her leg and glasses, she couldn't get down anyway. If she were to get down the robbery would put her into perspective. It would let her know that she is still a regular human being and there are people that are smarter than her. After her experience she learned that the world is not full of good country people and that she can not make fun of them for being good country people. Hulga would also benefit me as a potential tutor for school. Also, with Hulga being handicapped my family and I could park in handicapped parking spaces. In the end, Hulga’s actions can be influenced to stop while Emily psychological problems are unpredictable.
Choosing between Emily and Hulga as my sister is an extremely tough desicion. I think would choose Hulga because of Emily's inability to let go of the pass. If I were ever to do something wrong to her, or on her behalf she wouldn't be able to forgive me or let me forget what I did. Like Hulga, Emily also struggles with pride issues. Because of her inability to let go of the past, she stays in the past and believes her life is perfect. A parallel to her life is the title of the story, A Rose for Emily. Which means every rose has thorns, so like Emily's life as beautiful as a rose she thought her life was, it had alot of thorns which means it wasn't as she thought it was.
Hulga, on the other hand I could put up with. She just is too prideful for her own good, which can be fixed as it was in the story by Manley Pointer who took her pride away by taking away her leg and glasses. However, with Emily her inability to let go of the past and determination to live in the past by any means necessary is something that cannot be fixed or addressed no matter how hard you try. Hulga has the ability to be a better person which she will be I believe after the incident with Manley Pointer. Emily is at the extreme when she kills Homer to keep him from leaving her and then sleeps with his dead body for 42 years.
Prideful. A word to describe two young and egotistic characters Miss Emily from William Faulkner’s “A Rose for Emily,” and Hulga, from “Good Country People” by Flattery O’Connor. When reading “A Rose for Emily,” readers acquire a sense of mystery, obscurity. Readers quickly discover that Emily, is not one for conforming. Emily definitely does her own thing, even though she is being looked upon poorly by those in the town. As for Hulga, or previously known as Joy, she is undeniably seeking attention as the “rebel” of the town. Hulga is certainly prideful, but it takes a very unexpected and shocking event for her to realize that she may not be so powerful after all.
When asked the question “If you had to choose either Emily or Hulga, who would you rather have as your sister? Why?” thinking long and hard, weighing the pros and cons for each of the two characters, the decision was made. It was Hulga. While I empathize with Miss Emily and her desperate attempt to hold onto the past as so many people do, I realized what she did to hold onto the past. They say “If you love something, left it go.” The memories of the times you cherished with a person will always be apart of you. One does not have to turn to murder in order to hold onto the past. On page 13 of the text, William Faulkner writes, “All the past is not a diminishing road but, instead, a huge meadow which no winter ever quite touches,” and what this quote is saying is that the past will always be apart of you, never to be forgotten or to disappear with time. The past will stay with you forever. This fact alone is what made Hulga a clear and definite win.
Sometimes it takes an awful event for one to realize what they have and what they take for granted. For Hulga, that event was getting her leg and glasses stolen. Although the novel ends before we the readers get to see a further reaction from Hulga, most would assume that she would step back and view her life from a different perspective. Some could argue that Joy changed her name as an act of defiance towards her mother. She wanted nothing to do with the fact that her name “Joy” related her personality to something happy and cheerful. However, the reason Hulga is now my “new sister” is because Emily could never take back the fact that she killed two men who she adored. But, as for Hulga she always had the chance to change her views of the world, and to view life in a more optimistic manner.
In my opinion I believe I would rather have Hulga as a sister. She realized how she needs to make better decisions and learn from her mistakes. I would not want Emily as a sister because she is simply a insane killer. Emily would eventually kill me and I would not want that to happen. Hulga and Emily are both odd in many ways but I would still rather have Hulga as a sister.
If I have to choose either Emily or Hulga as my sister, I will choose Hulga as my sister.
Although I will choose Hulga as my sister, but she may be not a sister who I want. But I have to choose either one of them, so I will choose Hulga. Because Emily is worse than Hulga in my point of view.
Though Hulga doesn't have her one leg, it is better than Emily's situation. Emily has a lots of pride and it will bother her brother. Because she always think she is right and she doesn't want to listen others. So as a brother it will be really hard time get along with her as a family. Also her acts like go in the public with Homer will make brother really shame of his sister.
Also one of the reason I don't like Emily more than Hulga is Emily can't act rationally. The act that she kept her father's and Homer's dead body in the house was really crazy thought as a adult. Even she really loved them, she need to act more carefully and don't act whatever she wants. Cause it can also effect to me if I were her brother.
So if I have to choose a sisiter between Emily and Hulga, I will choose Hulga as my sister.
In choosing either to have Hulga or Emily as a sister is extremely difficult considering both are nuts. Hulga is very stubborn and doesn't believe in anything while Emily is very open and outgoing as she is young but, as she grows old she becomes very to her self and secretive . I think Emily is a little more on the normal side of things compared to Hulga so I would choose her if I had no other choice.
I would choose Emily because she is outgoing and vibrant while she's young instead of being bitter and boring forever. Emily would have offered more to the table and she might have been pleasant to be around. Looking at how Hulga viewed life, it would be terrible to have to be around her. Emily's only downfall was that she liked a man that was homophobic and killed him to be with him and that she liked to keep dead bodies. According to her description she seemed normal until her dad died and it was a downfall from there. Even though both would be pretty bad to be around, Emily would be easier to handle.
Although both are the opposite of normal, Emily is the better candidate of the two. She seemed to be normal when she was young as any other person which is the most important because that is the time you spend time with your sibling and the time you cherish the most. Having Hulga as a sister would make me feel as if I didn't have a sister at all. At least Emily could add some input and that would be the biggest reason that I would have to choose Emily over Hulga.
Both Emily and Hulga are very arrogant people who cannot see reality because their blinded by their excessive pride
I would rather have Hulga as a sister because she is much more bearable than Emily. Hulga is very rude but she is still sociable unlike Emily who never came out of her house for forty years. Also another reason Hulga would be a better sister is that she is probably going to going to die in her mid forty’s so I do not have worry about her my whole life. Also Hulga wouldn’t go as a killing a man and sleeping with him because if she did it would make your whole family look very bad.
Both Emily and Hulga are very bad candidates for sister but if I had to pick one Hulga would win in a landslide
I don’t know about you all, but I sure don’t want to be poisoned for trying to leave my family and live out the rest of my life; and if I die, I want to be buried properly and as soon as possible. So it is an easy decision for me to make by choosing Hulga as a sister over Mrs. Emily, based solely on the fact that Mrs. Emily’s actions can be classified as highly disturbing.
To be honest, it is hard not to feel sorry for Hulga since “for more than twenty years she had had only one leg” (O’Connor, 21). This disability, along with many other factors, is a perfect reason for her to be so bitter about herself, her family, and her life in general. Think of how her life has turned since the hunting accident at age ten. After ten years of walking around fine, she is inflicted with the incurable disease of losing a limb and must face the frustration of living without it. She is not an attractive woman being rather large, and seems even more unattractive because of her rude and withdrawn attitude. She has studied and become a master at philosophy, but hasn’t built on her education because of knowledge of the short life span she had (because of her heart issues). This leaves her at home living with her mother and another family, whose daughters Mrs. Hopewell (Hulga’s mother) seemed to favor over her and whose mother (Mrs. Freeman) had become obsessed with her injury.
All the negativity has piled onto Hulga throughout her life, causing her to be pessimistic, even changing her name from Joy, a cheerful name, to Hulga, an ugly and unappealing one; rude, ignoring conversations with others and showing no respect for her mother; and extremely prideful, never listening to her mother or respecting others’ opinions and beliefs. Her mother couldn’t imagine having a bible in the parlor of the house, knowing that Hulga, an atheist, would throw a fit and refuse to let up until the bible was removed. Indeed, she was the immovable type, one who would not accept anyone else’s ideas.
But this characteristic is not too rare in society nowadays, which is why Hulga would be my choice as a sister over Mrs. Emily. I think I could handle her rude and prideful ways, knowing I would have to be patient and tolerate her because of all she has been through. It may be out of pity, but I would want to treat her well and make sure she was happy, all out of sympathy for her handicapped and short life. It is less of an issue than having Mrs. Emily as my sister.
I wouldn’t want to be worried about being killed.
Y.A.K.
Of the two stubborn characters, I would rather have Hulga as a sister rather than Emily. Both are blinded by pride but in different ways. Emily is a conceited woman that believes herself to be above everyone. This arrogance grows to a sadistic pride, which is illustrated by her bizarre actions. Hulga’s pride, on the other hand, is due to her expectations, loneliness, and how she is misunderstood, which leads to disassociation of the town. Between these two, one can get along with Hulga more because her pride is less brutal.
Hulga’s flaws can easily be overcome, as they are not nearly as severe as Emily’s. By giving Hulga attention and care, Hulga may not as be as isolated, causing her possibly to be more humble and modest. Her arrogance is very avoidable, and I would much rather pity my sister than be frightened of her. Although Hulga would most likely not be my favorite sibling, she would be a much better acquisition to the family than Emily.
If i had to choose Emily or Hulga to have as a sister, I would choose Emily. Yes she is weird, but she becomes a lot more weird after Homer is killed. It seems if as long as she had a lover than that would keep her occupied. If Emily was in this situation where Homer ends up dead, then as the loving brother that I would be I would help her back on her feet and have her find a new lover.
The other thing is that maybe she wouldn't be as weird if she had someone else in her life. She really only had her dad and Homer and she didn't want either of them to go. As you can see because they were both in her house for a period of time. Maybe if she had a brother to talk to she would be ok.
Now Hulga, even if she had a brother i think she would still be the way she is. She would more of annoying sister to me because i have a strong dislike for the way she acts.
In the end, they both aren't the best options but I could make Emily into the better sister.
If I have to choose a sister from Emily or Hulga, I would rather have Hulga as my sister.
Let’s compare them. Emily is a lady that doesn’t want to communicate with others, and her pride is from her own family history and her father. She can not believe her father’s death, and she always do what she believe is right, like acting as Homer’s wife. Then, she tried to save her pride and her love by killing Homer and put his dead body in her house. Finally, she just died with the smelly gross fallen monument. Hulga is a 30-year old lady (actually I thought she is mentally a girl) whose pride is her believe in nothing. She believes in nihilism, and thinks every one who act as a good country people is stupid. She tried to let her boyfriend (it seems we don’t know his real name) believe in nihilism too. According to her behavior, she did not do that, but actually she is trying to prove herself is different in order to prove Christian is wrong, she is so special and can not be his girlfriend.
I would rather choose Hulga but not Emily; because I think it’s easier to being with Hulga. I think I can change Hulga’s mind or let her not to emphasize her belief all the time, at least she want to communicate with others. Emily is some one that I can hardly communicate with, so I can barely change her mind. The most important thing is I do not want to be killed just because my “sister” wants to keep her pride forever.
That’s why I would rather choose Hulga.
If i had to choose a sister it would have to be Hulga. I would rather have a semi-crazy sister than a sister that kills a man and then spoons with it every night. It would be very creepy to be sleeping and know that your sister is spooning a dead guy that never had feelings for her.
Hulga is a little crazy but in the long run it would be better to have her as a sister than to have a murderer and you could actually sleep without worrying about being killed.
Emily is a really messed up person. She loves a guy that does not like her because he is gay and she cant accept that so she kills hima so that makes it creepy to a fact that you could be killed because she loves you in a different way than i would love a sister. It would cause way to many conflicts and would be a rocky relationship.
When reading the two short stories "A Rose For Emily" and "Good Country People" there are two very different women in each of the stories that both have too much pride. If I had to choose one of them to be my sister it would defiantly be Emily.
I would choose Emily as a sister because she is more to herself, would not get in my way, and doesn't get in anyone's business. However if I had Hulga as my sister I would have to deal with a very negative narcissist who is very highly opinionated. Also with Hulga she is really rude to the few people who love her, she should be great full for what she has, but she is not. At least Emily tried to hold on to the people she loved in a rather odd way but still she did not take them for granted. Because of their pride both of them would make terrible sisters but Emily is a slightly better sister.
